Technology Enhancement for Calculus

This Challenge 98 project is designed to facilitate the usage of technology in the Calculus sequence taught at UTEP's Department of Mathematical Sciences, with current emphasis on the material presented in Calculus II.

1. Purpose

The site is directed at students and instructors alike.

Students can

  • explore topics encountered in class,
  • get software help to do their home work exercises, and
  • check answers to their homework.

Instructors use the material mainly for in-class demonstrations to illustrate and enrich the material of their lectures.

2. Content and Prerequisites

The arrangement of the material follows loosely that of our textbook Most of the material of this site deals with the content of Chapters 7 - 10.

To use this material you need access to Mathematica, version 3.0 or beyond. This software is installed on almost all of the computers in the math lab in Bell Hall 130 as well as in the lab in CLRB 402. You will also find it installed on quite a few computers accessible to you in other departments throughout campus, in particular in Science and Engineering.

Mathematica is available in a student version, at a cost of about $140. Mathematica runs on many platforms such as Windows, Macs and Linux.
