Syllabus

Textbook. Donald Bindner and Martin Erickson. A Student's Guide to the Study, Practice, and Tools of Modern Mathematics, CRC Press, 2011. Amazon lists its price as $52.95 (8/23/2021).

Course Description. An introduction to technology used in mathematics education such as graphing calculators, computer algebra systems, course specific software and the use of the internet, and an exploration of its appropriate and effective use in the mathematics classroom.

Course Requirements/Deliverables.
- Software Review (30%): Students will give two 20-minute presentations on selected topics concerning software or its use in the classroom. Each student will distribute an accompanying 2-page handout.
- Video Lesson (15%): Students will produce a 3-minute video lesson on a topic of their choice. The lesson will be accompanied by a 1-page LaTeX lesson plan.
- Lesson Design (20%): Students will design and present a Math lesson of their choice involving appropriate technology (about 20-30 minutes in-class presentation, using Beamer for at least a portion of the presentation). An accompanying lesson plan in LaTeX should have a length of 3-5 pages.
- Wolfram Project (10%): Each student will produce a Mathematica notebook featuring an animation.
- GeoGebra (10%): Each student will submit a GeoGebra construction to the GeoGebra materials collection.
- Homework and some in-class activities will account for the remaining 15% of your grade.

Time Requirement. I expect that you spend an absolute minimum of six hours a week outside of class on preparing your individual and group activities, reading the textbook, preparing for the next class, reviewing your class notes, and completing homework assignments. Not surprisingly, it has been my experience that there is a strong correlation between class grade and study time.

Drop Policy. The class schedule lists Friday, October 29, as the last day to drop with an automatic "W". The College of Science will remain aligned with the University and not approve any drop requests after that date.

CoVid-19 Precaution. Please stay home if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. If you are feeling unwell, please let me know as soon as possible, so that we can work on appropriate accommodations. If you have tested positive for COVID-19, you are encouraged to report your results to covidaction@utep.edu, so that the Dean of Students Office can provide you with support and help with communication with your professors. The Student Health Center is equipped to provide COVID-19 testing. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people in areas of substantial or high COVID-19 transmission wear face masks when indoors in groups of people. The best way that Miners can take care of Miners is to get the vaccine. If you still need the vaccine, it is widely available in the El Paso area, and will be available at no charge on campus during the first week of classes.
