  • Catalog Course Description: GRAD 6100. Issues in Higher Education. Multi-disciplinary seminar on current issues in higher education. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.
  • Course Outcomes: By the end of the semester you will
  1. Succinctly articulate your research and professional goals;
  2. Set expectations for yourself and your graduate education;
  3. Develop skill sets to increase your success (graduate school, career, and beyond).
  • Attendance: As per the LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate contract, attendance is mandatory except for excused absences that are approved in advance.
  • Calendar:
    • September 1. Welcome and introductions. Purpose of the seminar. Icebreaker.
    • September 8. Three letters: PhD. Setting expectations.
    • September 15. STEM doctoral career paths. Exploring short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals.
    • September 22. Articulating your research statement. One-minute elevator speech.
    • September 29. Practicing elevator speeches.
    • October 6. Broadening participation in STEM.
    • October 13. Identity, multiplicity, and consciousness. Reference: Wealth of Selves by Edwina Barvosa. Texas A&M University Press, 2008.
    • October 20. Asserting ourselves and empathizing with others. Handling micro-aggressions.
    • October 27. 3MT: Three-minute thesis. Graduate school guest speaker.
    • November 3. Goal setting and time management.
    • November 10. BD alumni panel.
    • November 17. Taking care of your mind and body. Resources. Guest: Dr. Shenberger-Trujillo.
    • November 24. Thanksgiving Holiday.
    • December 1. Ice cream with Dr. Knaust.
  • Deliverables:

Prepare a personalized website with the following items:

    • Short-term, mid-term, long-term goals
    • One-minute elevator speech
    • Three-minute thesis video
    • Identity statement
  • Grading: The grading scale for this course is S/U.
