  • Textbook/Material.
    • Calculus by Larson and Edwards, 9th Edition (available as e-book and hardcover)

  • Calculator. A scientific calculator may be used on all assignments. No graphing or CAS calculators are allowed.
  • Learning outcomes. Students are expected to have a clear understanding of the ideas of Calculus as a solid foundation for subsequent courses in mathematics and other disciplines as well as for direct application to real life situations.
  • Exams and test-outs. There will be three exams and one comprehensive final. A Test Out Exam is administered in the library after each semester exam. A passing test out exam (60% or greater) will replace the previous exam grade. A comprehensive test out exam will be administered after Maymester. A passing grade (70% or greater) on the comprehensive test out exam will replace a failing course grade, with a maximum grade of C. You must sign up to take the test out exam at a specific time because seating is limited. Failure to sign up means that you may not take this optional exam.
  • Exam Dates:
    • Exam 1: R February 16 (Test-out F February 24, Instructions)
    • Exam 2: R March 29 (Test-out F April 6)
    • Exam 3: T May 1 (Test-out M May 7)
    • Final exam: R May 10, 19:00-21:45 (Test-out TBA)
  • Time Requirement. I expect that you spend an absolute minimum of eight hours a week outside of class on reading the textbook, preparing for the next class, reviewing your class notes, and completing homework assignments. Not surprisingly, it has been my experience that there is a strong correlation between class grade and study time.
  • Grading Policy. Your grade will be calculated as follows:
    • WebAssign 15%
    • In-Class Quizzes 10%
    • Exam 1 15%
    • Exam 2 15%
    • Exam 3 15%
    • Comprehensive Final 30%
  • Grading Scale. 90 – 100 = A, 80 – 89 = B, 70 – 79 = C, 60 – 69 = D, 0 – 59 = F.
  • Attendance. You are strongly encouraged to attend class every day. I expect you to arrive for class on time and to remain seated until the class is dismissed. Please turn off cell phones when you enter class and participate in class, active participation in this class is a vital part of your success.
  • Make-up Exams. Make-up tests will only be given under extraordinary circumstances, and only if you notify the instructor prior to the exam date. There will be no make-up quizzes.
  • Drop Policy. The class schedule lists Friday, March 30, as the last day to drop with an automatic "W". After the deadline, I can only drop you from the course with a grade of "F". Students are limited to six course withdrawals (drops) during their academic career at all public institutions of higher education in Texas. Drops include those initiated by students or faculty and withdrawals from courses at other institutions! This policy does not apply to courses dropped prior to census day or to complete withdrawals from the university.
  • Academic Integrity Policy. Each student is responsible for notice of and compliance with the provisions of the Regents’ Rules and Regulations, which are available for inspection electronically at http://www.utsystem.edu/bor/rules/homepage.htm. All students are expected and required to obey the law, to comply with the Regents’ Rules and Regulations, with System and University rules, with directives issued by an administrative official in the course of his or her authorized duties, and to observe standards of conduct appropriate for the University. A student who enrolls at the University is charged with the obligation to conduct himself/herself in a manner compatible with the University's function as an educational institution. Any student who engages in conduct that is prohibited by Regents’ Rules and Regulations, U. T. System or University rules, specific instructions issued by an administrative official or by federal, state, or local laws is subject to discipline, whether such conduct takes place on or off campus or whether civil or criminal penalties are also imposed for such conduct.
  • Military Statement. If you are a military student with the potential of being called to military service and /or training during the course of the semester, you must contact me as soon as possible before you leave.
  • Disability Statement. If a student has or suspects he/she has a disability and needs an accommodation, he/she should contact the Disabled Student Services Office (DSSO) at 747-5148, at dss@utep.edu, or go to Room 106 Union East Building. The student is responsible for presenting to the instructor any DSS accommodation letters and instructions.
